Choosing Keywords for Your Website

Choosing Keywords for WebsiteFor small business owners who don’t have enough time to sit down and write copy for their website, or for individuals who don’t feel confident in their writing skills, it is still a wise decision to take the time to research and focus on particular keywords for the website. Doing so will make your website’s text more effective—for the user and search engines alike.

One good way to start a keyword list is to assess all of your company’s services and current clients. For example, if you sell landscaping materials in Arizona, make a list of all your products (i.e., landscaping gravel, synthetic lawns, waterfalls, etc.) and then determine your target cities (i.e., Phoenix; Mesa; Tempe; etc.).

Then use a keyword tool, like the free one Google offers, and establish which keywords have good search volume and are not too competitive (unless you know you’re going to have an aggressive SEO effort), such as “landscaping gravel Phoenix” and “Mesa synthetic lawns.” From there, you will have a pretty solid list of keywords to base your website’s content.

Of course, there is a lot more to keyword research and focus, but there is a lot of information on the Internet that can help, as well as an abundance of firms that offer SEO services, and even full-service writing companies that have experience in writing SEO-friendly website text.

Put effort and time into your website’s content—especially when choosing keywords—and your website can become a power tool for your company.

  1. Keyword research is very important. It involves a lot of trial and error even with advanced tools. So, it can be quite overwhelming. A nice keyword tool will make things easier. It also helps if the niche you are researching is one that you are passionate about.
